About AFLA

Africa Legal Aid (AFLA) is a non partisan, non profit Pan African International organization that seeks to promote human rights and justice in Africa. The organization was established in 1995 in response to the atrocities and international crimes committed in many African countries and the wide-spread violations of economic and social rights. AFLA is one of the few international non-governmental organizations that exclusively address legal and human rights issues in Africa and has played a pioneering and leading role in developing African perspectives on international human rights law and standard-setting.

More Specifically, AFLA:

-Counsels individuals and groups on Human Rights Matters
-Promotes Human Rights Awareness
-Publicizes Human Rights Violations
-Researches Human Rights Conditions
-Pressurizes States to Comply with their Human Rights Obligations
-Analyses Human Rights Legislation and Treaties
-Contributes Towards the Development of Progressive Human Rights Jurisprudence

AFLA Office Locations

The original AFLA location was first established in Maastricht, the Netherlands, the choice of venue for the launch of an African organization was largely coincidentally, an accident of history. The Maastricht location has since moved to The Hague. In May 2005, AFLA signed a Headquarters Agreement with the government of Ghana establishing Accra as the international secretariat of Africa Legal Aid. AFLA also maintains satellite establishments in Pretoria and The Hague. Specifically, The Hague is used as a platform for South-North dialogue. The Pretoria office in South Africa is the first sub-regional satellite office to be registered and will become fully operational later this year. In the future, the organization plans to expand with other satellite offices in the African sub-regions.
