A Leading Voice:
AFLA has become a leading voice in the world of international non governmental organizations. AFLA has provided legal and human rights institutions including, the judiciary, legal practitioners, government ministries, attorneys-general, civil society organizations and development cooperation groups with a platform for both gaining and sharing knowledge on the African human rights system and international criminal justice.
One of the notable outcomes of AFLA's activities is the adoption of the Cairo-Arusha Principles on Universal Jurisdiction in Respect of Gross Human Rights Offences: An African Perspective. The Principles enjoy international recognition and were cited in a dissenting opinion of the International Court of Justice on February 14th, 2002 in the case concerning the arrest warrant of April 11th 2000. AFLA has also:
-Spearheaded the contribution of much needed African perspectives to international norms and standard setting.
-Submitted test cases to the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (also on behalf of other organizations.)
-Lobbied at various levels on an extensive range of human rights issues.
-Developed a considerable database of the work of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights.
-Organized high level seminars involving a diverse range of participants.
-Produced a wealth of publications.
